The Next New Thing

I think the newest cool thing that has just come out is "Facebook Live." People are live broadcasting big events and moments in their lives. Big events that happen, when people are there, are able to go live and share their times with their facebook friends.

I also really enjoy the snapchat geotags. I think it is so amazing that you can go different places in the world and those tags you can put on your photos are only available there.

I think within some time, people will be able to be represented by holograms so it will seem like 2 people will be able to meet together in a more physical form. When I was growing up, I never thought that there would be any video chatting, now its completely normal. This will be so interesting so watch develop.

Our Class Wiki - So Far

I plan to add many different aspects of research to the WIKI. The sections I will add too are P2P, YouTube, Photography, Politics, and entertainment. I feel like the information I have learned from this course will help me to add to those sections specifically.

P2P File Sharing

What is file sharing?

File sharing is when you share files from one computer to another. Software, media, or other types of computer programs.

What is P2P File sharing?

P2P File sharing is when you share copyrighted software or media to other people's computers legally or illegally. Peer to Peer.

What are some examples of P2P file sharing?

Sharing Microsoft word, sending your friends music, giving someone the adobe suite that you paid for.

The Bitorrent Effect

Privacy

In this post, discuss how the issues of privacy and confidentiality are related to new media

There are so many things related to privacy and confidentiality and new media. People are putting their whole lives out into the open and no one is really completely private anymore. People are hacking into other people lives and making fake profiles for them. People can steal confidential information and use it to steal credit cards and creating fraud. With more and more platforms of new media arising, people are putting all of their information out there which makes it so easy for people to access your life and privacy.

Advice

You are hired by the College to use new media to improve the College. What are some suggestions you would make using new media?

There are many ways the BC is not using new media. They could make more interesting newsletters, include photos and other things to get people excited. Also, I learned today about all of the different ways that we are not using the media that BC offers to us because we are not informed about it. Such as the electronic databases at the library. We could also do more internet interactive things to make our school be a more exciting place. We should upgrade our technology in the classroom to smartboards and make our learning be more beneficial.

Creativity and New Media

I created an avatar of myself for an online persona with the bitmoji app. He is currently dressed up for halloween and in a pirate costume that he like to wear sometimes when he is feeling frisky. He is a cartoon version of myself that I can send to people with different messages. Today he sates "Go Vote" since the election is coming up. You pick everything about him down to his hair color. And when there are movies and other things coming out, they let you dress up in outfits of the moves to promote them.

Here he is!

Creativity

New Media is fostering creativity because people have more access to media than ever before. People see different things that inspire them to create things of their own. Wether it is music, film, videos, make up artists, visual art, or even architecture. People are able to take anything these days and twist it around and make it their own.

Just like the article about how disney tolerates a rap parody. It seems funny that some group would take something as innocent as disney music and characters and make it a parody, but people like it. They are inspired by the music and wanted to make it their own. Copyright has been pretty lenient on mash-ups and parodies, the article states.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

It seems these days that everything can be done virtually. Learning, talking with family, google maps, you can tour homes that you want to buy, you can visit places on the internet, and people even have virtual sex these days. I do not necessarily think that it is a bad thing that this is all happening, but people need to realize that humans need actual human to human interactions, not just with a screen.

Going to a Virtual Office in a Second Life is an articale about how people are now starting to work from home and just enter the office virtually. They meet online in virtual meeting spaces and some programs even allow you to make yourself as a virtual avatar and actually show up virtually to these meetings. You can even share the files that you have been working on with programs like "Dropbox" and "Google Docs." My offices becomes more and more virtual all the time. I had meetings today with people from Austin, TX over the large computer screen in the middle of the conference room.

In the article Advantages and Disadvantages of the Virtual Classroom and the Role of the Teacher, it is about how more and more classes are becoming online. Sometime there are actual class meetings online, not just work and papers, like ours. In most cases, these classes become half in the class room and half online, like the hybrid classes that are offered (or they become) at Brooklyn College! It is more challenging for the student to learn, studies show. Teachers are more able in the classroom and they create relationships with their students that allow for farther learning!
