The Next New Thing

I think the newest cool thing that has just come out is "Facebook Live." People are live broadcasting big events and moments in their lives. Big events that happen, when people are there, are able to go live and share their times with their facebook friends.

I also really enjoy the snapchat geotags. I think it is so amazing that you can go different places in the world and those tags you can put on your photos are only available there.

I think within some time, people will be able to be represented by holograms so it will seem like 2 people will be able to meet together in a more physical form. When I was growing up, I never thought that there would be any video chatting, now its completely normal. This will be so interesting so watch develop.

Our Class Wiki - So Far

I plan to add many different aspects of research to the WIKI. The sections I will add too are P2P, YouTube, Photography, Politics, and entertainment. I feel like the information I have learned from this course will help me to add to those sections specifically.

P2P File Sharing

What is file sharing?

File sharing is when you share files from one computer to another. Software, media, or other types of computer programs.

What is P2P File sharing?

P2P File sharing is when you share copyrighted software or media to other people's computers legally or illegally. Peer to Peer.

What are some examples of P2P file sharing?

Sharing Microsoft word, sending your friends music, giving someone the adobe suite that you paid for.

The Bitorrent Effect

Torrents allow people to share files right from their computer over the internet. It is a file sharing program that uploads from one computer or multiple computers and downloads to others.

Privacy

In this post, discuss how the issues of privacy and confidentiality are related to new media

There are so many things related to privacy and confidentiality and new media. People are putting their whole lives out into the open and no one is really completely private anymore. People are hacking into other people lives and making fake profiles for them. People can steal confidential information and use it to steal credit cards and creating fraud. With more and more platforms of new media arising, people are putting all of their information out there which makes it so easy for people to access your life and privacy.

Advice

You are hired by the College to use new media to improve the College. What are some suggestions you would make using new media?

There are many ways the BC is not using new media. They could make more interesting newsletters, include photos and other things to get people excited. Also, I learned today about all of the different ways that we are not using the media that BC offers to us because we are not informed about it. Such as the electronic databases at the library. We could also do more internet interactive things to make our school be a more exciting place. We should upgrade our technology in the classroom to smartboards and make our learning be more beneficial.

Creativity and New Media

I created an avatar of myself for an online persona with the bitmoji app. He is currently dressed up for halloween and in a pirate costume that he like to wear sometimes when he is feeling frisky. He is a cartoon version of myself that I can send to people with different messages. Today he sates "Go Vote" since the election is coming up. You pick everything about him down to his hair color. And when there are movies and other things coming out, they let you dress up in outfits of the moves to promote them.

Here he is!

Creativity

New Media is fostering creativity because people have more access to media than ever before. People see different things that inspire them to create things of their own. Wether it is music, film, videos, make up artists, visual art, or even architecture. People are able to take anything these days and twist it around and make it their own.

Just like the article about how disney tolerates a rap parody. It seems funny that some group would take something as innocent as disney music and characters and make it a parody, but people like it. They are inspired by the music and wanted to make it their own. Copyright has been pretty lenient on mash-ups and parodies, the article states.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

It seems these days that everything can be done virtually. Learning, talking with family, google maps, you can tour homes that you want to buy, you can visit places on the internet, and people even have virtual sex these days. I do not necessarily think that it is a bad thing that this is all happening, but people need to realize that humans need actual human to human interactions, not just with a screen.

Going to a Virtual Office in a Second Life is an articale about how people are now starting to work from home and just enter the office virtually. They meet online in virtual meeting spaces and some programs even allow you to make yourself as a virtual avatar and actually show up virtually to these meetings. You can even share the files that you have been working on with programs like "Dropbox" and "Google Docs." My offices becomes more and more virtual all the time. I had meetings today with people from Austin, TX over the large computer screen in the middle of the conference room.

In the article Advantages and Disadvantages of the Virtual Classroom and the Role of the Teacher, it is about how more and more classes are becoming online. Sometime there are actual class meetings online, not just work and papers, like ours. In most cases, these classes become half in the class room and half online, like the hybrid classes that are offered (or they become) at Brooklyn College! It is more challenging for the student to learn, studies show. Teachers are more able in the classroom and they create relationships with their students that allow for farther learning!

Blog about Twitter

Twitter conversations are much more casual than any other type of conversation. Also, I feel like twitter is used much more for dissing people and being kind of upfront in a strategic way. You could never say some of the things that you would say on a school based page or in a class room that you would on twitter. Twitter also give you a platform to easily add media, that you could not do in a school page or in a classroom setting. When I just made my comments on other peoples twitter posts, I added gifs to my posts because I think they are funny and add character. It is informal and for the world to see. Shine Bright With All Your Colors!

Twitter is for news and making your opinion heard on almost anything. People make it their personal opinion space and you can kind of get to know someone by what they voice on this platform.

Social Networking Sites

Wow! Social Media is so flippin' cool these days!!!

Let me start off with Facebook.... I was a long time Facebook hater for awhile. I feel like a few years ago it lost its *sparkle* but now has returned due to all of the other types of media you are able to share on it. I look at Facebook for most of my news now.

Twitter and I have a love hate relationship. I used Twitter for years and towards the end of my usage I felt like I was always trying to think of witty tweets that would make people think I was funny. I finally deleted my twitter (due to avoiding a certain someone, of course) and it took me about 1 month to finally stop thinking in tweets! Que Pena! I am not back on due to this class but trying to avoid going back to my original twitter addiction.

Instragram is probably the best platform out currently for making a image for yourself. You are able to carefully curate your profile kind of like an art piece if you want to. I like the platform, the photo editing software, and honestly it is just easy to use.

Snapchat may be the newest and possibly soon to be the most popular. I think the fact that you can keep people updated on your daily life instantly and they can watch it whenever/wherever they would like is amazing. The filters, the geolocations, and the new news stores! So amazing!

This article is about why people are acting like they have perfect lives and only showing their selves in perfect form, not when they are just living their lives. This article uses example such as “people want to act like they do not eat a lot, so they post photos of artisanal salads” and “Why don’t people feel its necessary to post photos of themselves shaving their dogs or with wet hair.” I feel like people want to look better in the photos they take and make people feel like they are always having fun to make them seem more interesting.

ARCENEAUX, M. (2015, October 22). Is it 'fake' to only show your best self on social media? Retrieved from http://www.complex.com/life/2015/10/social-media

This article is about young adults portraying happiness and also deciding how much of their lives to share, or keep private. When you are only posting photos of all of the fun and exciting things you do, you make be faking a lifestyle that is not really that way. It speaks about not posting all of the undesirable things in your life, but to keep it more realistic and human. No one is perfect in every way.

People are more connected than ever. The writer talks about how he used to receive more that 15-20 phone calls a day because that was the only means of communication. Now most people have more than 10 forms of communication and use them all daily. You can even connect with people you have never even met before and make them think you are a totally different person.

Most people only show their ideal self on social media. Other people’s perception of ourselves is more important than ever. We see and look up to these social media celebrities and it makes us want to actually become something like them in our own way. People are taking ideas and marketing skills from one and other and using them in their own way. People do not want to be their “real self” but instead their “Ideal Self.” This article also offers tips to consider while using social networking.

This article speaks about how much more woman are interactive with social media than men. When people are reading and searching through social media for content is it one thing, but when it becomes obsessive and makes you upset, it becomes a problem People need to focus on their own dreams and not worry about what other people are doing. It simply makes people jealous and makes them loose their self-esteem and brings people down.

This article lists the main actions and things that people lie about on social media. Appearance, relationships, partying, traveling, food, Diet, fitness, babies, pets, coolness, clothing, and perfection are all things that people lie about. I will/can go more in depth when I am writing the paper.

This is a video about how social media is changing out perception of reality. It makes us show off and act certain ways to look cool to others.

Just spending time and looking at how celebrities are posting on social media are changing the perspective and what peoples image of themselves are. Beauty and style have changed and are consistently changing.

This is sort of an overall view of the same concept with a religious side towards it. It talks about what you do on social media and how god or your family from the past would think about what you are doing on social media and lying to others.

Social Networking

What are some ways (corporate and otherwise) that these technologies can be used? What are the benefits of these technologies to society? Be specific. Is there a "dark side"? Make sure to include your opinion of the way these technologies might evolve in the future.

Social networking and social media are used in SO many ways. People brand themselves, brand business, and they can brand pretty much anything. People are able to connect with each other. They can create an image and portray themselves in anyway they want to be seen. They can collaborate with other businesses and expand their markets. Businesses use people with a lot of instagram followers to post about their products and services and use that as advertising. Kylie Jenner does this all of the time and the second she posts about a product is sold out immediately.
There are many benefits to social networking in society. People are able to stay connected, get new jobs, find what they are looking for on any platform. People find love on social networking. It connects you to like people and suggests jobs and new places to eat, drink, or explore! There are many dark sides of social networking. People get so addicted to it and it is very time consuming. People stop worrying about living their own life and start becoming consumed with what other people are doing at all times.
I think that these technologies will only get more and more involved with peoples personal lives. There will be nothing to hide and people will be able to start sharing anything they want to. Now that facebook live, snapchat, and instagram's new instastories are here to stay, there is no stopping people from sharing anything they want to.

Blogs vs. Wikis

Compare and contrast blogs and wikis. Comment on the importance of convergence in today's networked world. How can blogs be used for collaboration? Can you think of a new use for a wiki that has not been done yet?

I think that blogs are much more user friendly than wikis. It is so easy to use this blogger and easy to look at other peoples. It is more personalized and you can make it your own. A wiki is kind of bland and a more collaborative effort, where people can post topics and it becomes kind of a conversation. I am not really sure in which sense convergence is being used here, but I would say that having a page with that is a collaborative effort is very important in this day and age. All work is collaborative and the more people there are to make something more informative, the better. So therefore, convergence is very important.

Blogs can be used for collaboration by having a joined blog with someone and making it a popular type of page that people want to follow. you joined ideas make the page what it is and people enjoy reading it. A new use for a wiki would be allowing it to look more like a website with innovative design. Maybe it could be more mdeia based rather than texted based.

Social Media - The Truth... or Simply Misrepresentation?

I would discuss how people post and take photos of things that make them look really interesting to others while this usually is not the case at all. I would also go in to how it affects their personal lives and gains them sponsorship and money for just being popular on the internet.
